Our dental team at Dental Excellence believes that using the most advanced dental technology is just as important as using the most up-to-date treatment techniques. We pride ourselves on providing patients with the safest, most convenient, most long-term treatment options available. Even our X-ray technology demonstrates our mindfulness toward our patients' well being; we use a new X-ray technique called digital imaging or digital X-rays. Read on to learn about how digital imaging is different from older X-ray technology and how this new technique will benefit you.

How does digital imaging work?

Like traditional X-rays, digital X-rays use radiation to get a picture of your teeth, but the process has been greatly simplified. You'll still wear a protective apron over your body, but instead of using X-ray film, an electronic sensor that captures the images is placed in your mouth. This sensor is covered in a new protective plastic for each patient. An X-ray machine will then be positioned against your cheek and a picture will be taken with the click of a button. Because there is no film, there is nothing to develop. The images are sent instantly to a computer where they can be viewed, shared, stored, or printed. Essentially, the digital sensor serves as film to capture a more accurate and detailed image of your teeth.

What are the benefits to digital imaging?

digital x-rays

One of the major benefits to digital X-rays is that patients are exposed to less radiation, which is good for your long-term health. While an occasional X-ray has always been a very small risk, the less radiation you experience, the better.

This new digital imaging technique also improves the dental care available by making x-rays more convenient and accurate. Because there is no film to develop, there is absolutely no wait time; the images are instantly available. Treatment can also become more precise as these digital images can be enlarged and enhanced instantly on the computer screen; the pictures are also more clear and detailed than what you see with film X-rays. This makes it easier for us to find the problem and for you to see what the issue is as well.

Additionally, the software that is used to create digital X-ray images can be used to compare imaging over time. This process, called subtraction radiography, can help us to see even tiny changes in your teeth that wouldn't have been noticed with traditional X-rays. The computer does this by comparing two different images and showing only what has changed between the pictures.

Finally, digital imaging is helpful because the images can be shared electronically with other offices. If you move, get dental work while on a trip, want a second opinion, or need a new dentist, these images can be sent to your new dentist. A more precise dental record is able to follow you wherever you go. The images can also be shared with a specialist in the case of more complex dental problems.

At Dental Excellence, we'll make your dental experience as comfortable and convenient as possible. If you are looking for the best dentist in Independence, we hope you'll put us to the test.
